MARXIST ANALYSIS SEX AND THE CITY SERIES

During the 1920's there were various political, social class hierarchy, as well as gender gap separation issues within society. As we fast forward to the late 90's early 2000's we seem to still see these hierarchal and political issues, more so with our current gender gap of men and women.
Let's dive in. BUT FIRST!

"SEX AND THE CITY" was a series that very much portrayed the social rise and the upholding of women. We were introduced to 4 strong and powerful women that not only were the prime example of how a women should be living in the big city of New York.

Carrie is set to be a journalist in New York City. As she discovers herself and the hard work it takes to be a well thought opinionated journalist she also knows to balance her work life with her social life. During the series we see a character development in being a materialistic woman living in the upper east side of Manhattan. It may seem to be that these women seem to know what they want and be empowering to other women when in fact they can be very egotistical, and materialistic.

From the people they meet their seems to be this upper class social friendship to only associate those with money. The only person we seem to see a normative friendship is between Carrie's personal assistant, Louise. Louise is mid class women looking to seek love in New York, while finding a job and simultaneously renting Louis Vuitton handbags so others see her as an upper working class woman. We then come across one of Carrie's best friend, Samantha.

Samantha is a protagonist who is a self driven women who owns her Public Relations company. She is woman who is not normally seen in the public eye but is definitely a character many women don't speak about because they summon her personality discreetly. She sums up what many believe a women should be, which is full of botox, money, sexy, fit, employed, and the boss.

Samantha has always been a dominant character to never think twice or hesitate with her decision that has always been best for her. She holds this universal feminism power that stand against the ideal male patriarchal society. 375

SEX AND THE CITY takes the stand to somehow contradict these patriarchal ideologies with certain characters such as Samantha, while simultaneously giving in to portraying women to only be viewed as materialistic and egotistical. This idea of Marxism is said to have an influence on this show which stirred many questionable perceptions on the stories behind these 4 young women.
