BLOG #3: Manic Pixie Dream Girl
NERD NANNY

Remember that you can discuss how the episode succeeds in delivering a critique of the dominant ideology of gender and how it fails if you feel it does both.

In the Big Bang Theory we have this character named Penny who has developed from being the airhead hot blonde neighbor to actually growing and developing her character to being an actual independent woman who can live on her own without any man needing to tell her what to do, how to feel, or what to say.

At the beginning of the season we saw this distressed country girl coming to the big city to make it as an actress and make it big in Hollywood. When in fact by day was making a couple of commercial auditions that weren't doing her career justice, and by night she was waitressing tables at the Cheesecake Factory in Pasadena.

A little background information on the setting of Pasadena is that Pasadena is well off and comfortable.  Its filled with blocks of shopping stores, bars, and restaurants. Many young people go by for dates, hangouts, and because the apartment complexes are above the store locations a lot of residents roam around the city of Pasadena.

But back to Penny and her character development. The creators of the Big Bang Theory really thought the process through with creating and developing a character such as Penny to draw a connection with young girls and also draw a fan base with the male audience. As creators your job is to think of what show is going to appeal or what story will appeal to both female and male audiences of a certain age group.

In Physical attributes lets be real, we see an Americanized white woman playing a country girl wanting to make it big in the city. First off in this sentence alone there are some many questions to that appealing to only the female target audience and shows no connection to a general female target audience.

Her Character plays the role of a ditsy mid twenty blonde woman trying to make her way to stardom. I personally don't feel it represents again adversity of all women in different social hierarchy classes due to the focus on being the men and them all being PHD Scientists who work at NASA in Pasadena.

Personal attributes go along way in this show. We see various personalities of Raj Being this insecure Indian guy when he speaks to women, Sheldon who is this male dominance in any conversation that occurs around him, Leonard who is more of a humble guy when around penny because of his crush on her but when he's around the guys he's the biggest nerd and loser you can imagine. Within this cast you seem diversity in personalities with all the characters and not just based on female or male attributes which I believe they executed quite well.

Because Penny is considered the more influential and dominant female character we tend to forget of Sheldon and Howards girlfriends who are also scientists. The difference and only critique I have for the rears is why not diversify the women as much as they diversify the men. Even then so Raj is the only "true" diverse character. These women characters may not live up to the physical traits that Penny may have but they're is the empowerment of having 2 scientists rather than just one, which out numbers Penny.

The only advice I would give creators of sit coms are really think of the target audience regarding to the diversification of who they want to be considered empowering.
